New Year's Day Walk

A group of 20 members and friends of Langdyke Countryside Trust met on January 1 for a walk at Southey Wood led by Frieda Gosling. It was bitterly cold, but we stopped at intervals for Frieda to outline the history, management and ecology of the woodland. She explained how the geology produces various soil types and pointed out indicator plants such as old man’s beard. Everyone was particularly intrigued with the swallow holes.

The trees looked wonderful in the winter light and some splendid mosses were seen – they are at their best in the winter months. In a coniferous section of the wood a troop of toadstools had survived the winter weather, possibly a species of Clitocybe.
