Not an April Fool

On 1 April we stopped to look at Maxey pits from the concrete apron on the Etton-Maxey road. We met two keen bird watchers from Yaxley, who kindly shared their telescopes and pointed out green sandpiper, redshank and snipe. Lapwings were displaying and skylarks singing.

My mission was to check on the coltsfoot because I’d seen their leaves last summer. However I was not prepared for the vast numbers of flowers colouring the landscape. It’s not that coltsfoot is a rare plant, but the quantity and quality of the blooms were mind-blowing. We carefully walked around the perimeter of the site so as not to disturb the skylarks or the wading birds. Seed heads were just beginning to develop – no doubt they will provide food for seed-eating birds. So if you want to see them you’ll have to go soon.
