Little Owl

The fact that I can now see little owls from my house in Helpston is really quite significant. We have never had a pair this close to the village before and what is more they are nesting in a box that I put up several years a go, but which to date has only played home to squirrels and great tits!

Last night the owl was perch hunting from telephone wires: sitting perfectly still right out in the open in good light, watching the ground beneath it and then dropping down on to its prey - probably beetles or very small mammals.

And to start the weekend well a red kite was wheeling in the blue sky above the house at 8.30 this morning, a sparrowhawk flew by over head and two bullfinch were calling from Royce Wood!
