The main sand martin colony south of the Maxey Cut is buzzing with birds at the moment, at least a couple of hundred, I would think, with lots of young birds flying around and over the water. There were also 5 lapwing on this pit yesterday evening and several common terns, although the pit has been flooded, so some of the tern nests have been lost.
There was also a turtle dove purring from the mobile phone mast on the north side of the Cut and a brood of tufted duck young on the pit south of the green bridge.
