Beasts at Night

I was lucky enough to catch sight of a stoat racing across the road on the way into Bainton on Sunday night. I haven't seen one around here for a while, perhaps a sign of a wider and general decline in numbers of this superb predator. Not to be confused, of course, with the smaller weasal, which has a much shorter tail too.

And coming back from Cambridge last night, I had to slow down on Heath Road to let two stag fallow deer cross the road and shortly afterwards watched a fox disappear into the hedgerow near Royce Wood!
