All that rubbish about our glossy ibis being an escape! What do I know?
Well this absolutely beautiful bird has now been at Etton - Maxey Pits for over a week and I caught up with it for the first time yesterday, having missed it by seconds (literally) twice in the week. It is stunning! And well worth going to see. Its large down-turned beak is something to see in itself. And its striking purple plumage is indeed glossy.
It appears every afternoon on the pits - it has been seen over Deeping Pits in the morning - and stays for an hour or more, before departing south-east, heading to the left of Etton Church. To date no-one has worked out where it goes, but it is clearly heading for its evening roost.
Interestingly the last time a glossy ibis was seen anywhere near here was in 1824 on Whittlesey Mere! Don't miss it then, few of us will be around in another 180 years!
