We have a winter roost of about 18 tree sparrows in the adjoining paddock to our garden. Some of the tree sparrows are now regularly visiting the feeders. Green woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker are also daily visitors. In addition to this we are seeing a couple of reed buntings on the bird table which seem to have attached themselves to a small flock of goldfinches visiting the niger seed. Apart from the usual garden birds we have seen 4 fieldfares on the lawn eating fallen apples. A goldcrest on our plum tree and during the last week the buzzard on our bottom hedge. Almost certainly the same one that has appeared on Maxey rd beyond the railway crossing.
The paddock also seems to be attracting game birds at the moment. I disturbed 5 female pheasants this morning and a couple of red legged partridge on Saturday. House sparrow numbers seem down on this time last year but starlings are definitely up.
