With spring now well under way it is encouraging to see many of our usual birds returning to set up territories in the vicinity. In particular the paddock next to our property has Whitethroat, Blackcap, Yellow hammer, Long tailed tits, Song Thrush and Linnet. Photo of male Linnet taken taken on one of the ash trees recently.
We are hoping that the pair of turtle doves which nested here last year will return again this season.
The garden now too is buzzing with birdsong with both blue tit and great tit taken up residency and wood pigeons building an untidy nest of twigs in our Buddleja Globosa (orange ball tree). Yesterday saw a male sparrowhawk conveniently sitting on the ground only 20ft from kitchen window. Normally we only see him scattering the small birds from our feeders.
Apart from birds we have common newts breeding in our small pond for third year running and common lizards basking in the recent sunshine on our rockery. Alas no sign of frogs for the second year running.
The sunny weather has already resulted in good butterfly numbers for so early in the season. Notably Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Brimstone, and since last week Orange Tips.
The Pipistrelle bats have returned to our 4 boxes and it is good to see that numbers are increasing here and in the paddock Ash trees.
