Castor Hanglands

An early morning walk around the new plantation at the Hanglands this morning produced the usual plethora of singing warblers - this really is the place if, like me, you are sad enough to want to practice your bird song identifcation and really hone up on the difference between the flute like, resonant notes of the blackcap and the liquid warbling of the garden warbler!

Well there were four singing garden warbler and three blackcap along with four nightingales - this is a high number for this area, normally there are 2-3 only.

Also a male bullfinch, a male cuckoo flying silently by, two chattering magpies and singing willow warbler, whitethroat and linnet.

No sound from the grasshopper warblers, but they are there - don't worry!

And a fox running down Heath Road when I got home at 7.00 - there must be a set near by I think.

Monday May 25th - River Nene at castor.

Dragonflies and Damselflies are begining to emerge with several adults on the wing!
A walk at the River Nene today saw a spectacular show of our most beautiful Damselfly the Banded Damoiselle which was there by the hundred!!
We also saw Red Eyed Damsels, Blue Tailed Damsels and the rare Variable Damsel found at this site for the first time. This is only the third site, that I know of, in North Cambs for this species.
All this with a Buzzard flying overhead and the sound of a Cuckoo ringing in our ears!!
