An early morning walk along the Cut yesterday, past the busy sand martin colony in the latest Tarmac workings. There must be about 50 occupied nest holes, although it is very hard to estimate.
A turtle dove was calling from the Old Maxey Pits, as well as a cuckoo, garden warbler and blackcap. A lesser whitethroat with food also flicked into view, presumably off to feed its chicks.
Also two common tern patrolling up and down the Cut, searching for their breakfast.
