Henry and I took a walk along the South Drain from the Helpston Road through to Etton last night, with lowering clouds behind us, it was a case of would we or would we not get soaked?
Before answering that question we were lucky enough to get two good sightings of little owl. The first of an adult as it swooped down out of the elm tree at the Etton end of the South Drain onto the recently harvested field, looking quickly in our direction before disappearing in trees around the bridge on the Etton Road.
The second was of a young bird in one of the nest boxes that Alan Baker of Tarmac has put up between the Drain and the Maxey Cut. It eyed us warily before flying out of the box into the tree and then round in a circle, alighting unsteadily in a small ash behind us!
And at that point the heavens opened and we trudged back along the Drain to the Land Rover, reaching that point of saturation at which you really don't notice any more - you can't get any more wet!
