Bainton Pits / Bittern

An early morning walk with my son proved to be very worthwhile today. Most of the lakes are totally frozen apart from a small area still kept clear on the main two pits by a crowded area of ducks, geese, gulls and cormorants. I counted 7 male goosanders among the usual suspects.

We saw a single water rail in the ponds near the Tallington weir off the Maxey Cut and a Muntjac deer from the south bank.

Now to the highlight of the day. On returning back to the north side of the main pit (nearest the entrance) we disturbed a bittern in the reeds only about 6 metres from us. It then flew westwards, low, hugging the reeds. It went out of view due the tree cover but think it dropped down not too very far away. We retraced our steps but unfortunately were not able to pinpoint it again.
Its the first time i have seen one locally and wonder if it is a first for Bainton Pits.

There were two records in April 2008.

A great find.
