Scouts and Newts

As part of their on-going work with the Trust, Helpston Scouts visited Swaddywell on Thursday 14 April to take part in a newt count. 15 Scouts and 2 leaders joined me as we splashed around in the dark, searching for common and great crested newts.

And newts there were in plenty - more than I have seen for some time. My troop started off in the pond on Robert Goodfellow's land and found three male GC newts there and then started walking around the main ponds. We found at least another 20, with great views of up to 6 in one spot. There were also about 10 common newts too.

We found no toads, unfortunately, but lots of dragon fly larvae and various small water beetles. All in all a very successful and enjoyable evening!
