High Summer in Helpston

Lesley, Henry and I walked around to Ashton this morning - warm and sunny - via Torpel field. There are plenty of swallows around the stables in the field - the young of at least two nests there. And lots of butterflies around too - mainly meadow brown and large white, but a number of gatekeeper and ringlet too, near Hilly Wood and two small copper feeding on ragwort on the south side of Royce Wood. I don't often come across these, so it was good to find them today.

Hornets have started building a nest in the central box of the sparrow terrace on the front of our house. They are also nesting in one of our neighbours nest-boxes too.

There was a hobby over the house, first thing this morning.

All signs of high summer!
