Maxey Pits

Etton Road - Maxey Pits seems quiet at the moment. There is plenty of open mud, but not a lot of bird life on it.

But the great thing about this reserve is that whatever you see, it is just a lovely place to wander round.

Over the last week I have been over three times. Today there were 5 green sandpiper, 3 snipe and a kingfisher, buzzing backwards and forwards along the main western ditch - the first I have seen here. But there was also plenty of tranquil activity - 6 little grebe, a golden plover preening on an exposed bank of mud, a heron flapping lazily by, plenty of teal and the odd lapwing over head.

Earlier in the week I had also found 4 tree sparrow near Vic Green's bungalow - again a new species for me at this site. They really do seem to be getting commoner and more widespread.

Later this afternoon, we walked around old Maxey Pits - a glorious late summer/early autumn evening. There were three green sandpiper on the old slurry pit off the Woodgate Lane.
